Just the designation files & shapefiles used here; this system was a quickie.

It's already in devel status for a while. Is it incomplete, any open issue, or can it go to preview?

It can be preview. I just left it as devel cuz I already had too darn many preview systems. :)

I think that's exactly the reason why we've introduced preview status. The system exists but it didn't appear on stats when it's not yet activated.
Please go ahead :)

Reviewing this:

3: OldLBRd -> CR2610; maybe also add a point just west of here at LakeBonRA to make it clear that it doesn't end at the entrance road
4 is signed north-south; should it be reversed?
6: End -> SowCrePark?
7: End -> Com12??
8: DeerTrl -> ChoCanSP or CalUnit; move north to the border
255: CR1053 -> CR1053/1106
255: NFS197 -> FR196

Done.

7: End -> Com12??
Nah. I'm calling this an "End at a barricade" scenario.

8: DeerTrl -> ChoCanSP or CalUnit; move north to the border
Hoo boy, this is a tricky one. Shapefiles put the endpoint at this intersection, which is signed as Quail Run. Changed.
OTOH, the link shows a clear pavement change at the park boundary. Pan left and we can see the back/side of what may be the first SB reassurance marker.
Neither endpoint jibes with the 1.4 miles listed in the designation file.
The grid map is inconclusive, but the Statewide planning map shows the designation north of Quail Run, but not the park boundary.
OK, I'm convinced. QuaRun is out; ChoCanSP is in.

255: CR1053 -> CR1053/1106
Meh, I don't like slashing together two county routes.
(Usually. If it's at an endpoint, I prefer to mention the intersecting road over the continuing road. So if that's the higher number, slashes it is.)
Nonetheless, I see that several have made their way into the state & US highways. None are in use. Getting rid of them.

255: NFS197 -> FR196
OK, I see the 196 designation on the map.
Nomenclature for these has always been a PitA for me. I've encountered, and probably also used, several variations in regions I've inherited. I thought I looked into standardizing on whatever once, but maybe not:
yakra@BiggaTomato:~/TravelMapping/yakra/HighwayData/hwy_data$ for rg in $MyRegions; do egrep '^NFS[0-9]+|^ForRd[0-9]+|^FR[0-9]+' $rg/*/*.wpt; done
TX/usatxf/tx.fm0201.wpt:FR117 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=31.169704&lon=-93.905672
TX/usatxre/tx.re255.wpt:NFS197 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=31.126554&lon=-93.664464
TX/usatx/tx.tx007.wpt:ForRd511 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=31.388973&lon=-95.039586
TX/usatx/tx.tx150.wpt:ForRd218 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=30.553637&lon=-95.082325

...and maybe any other formats I'm forgetting about?

If you think FR196 is the best style label for these, I'll standardize on that.

I don't know what's best, but in any case the number is wrong.

Nationwide:
4 NFS# labels, in MI, NC, TX & WA.
4 ForRd# labels, in KY, MI, TX & TX.
586 FR# labels.

FR# it is.

255: NFS197 -> FR196
This looks useful; where did you find the link?

Search Google for the name of the national forest, then look for the motor vehicle use map. I believe all national forests are required to publish them.

PS: also look for FH* and USFS*.

You might report the NFSs in MI, NC and WA, and ForRd in KY and MI? Just as proposal, the hwy data manager can refuse it if there is a good reason...
And we might add to the the manual one day as 'recommended abbreviation'.

There's at least one FH_, in the ca.ca162oro file. There's an FH7 sign at that location, and elsewhere within the Mendocino National Forest.

For FH, there's only the one Oscar mentioned.
