MA: MA88 southern end point may be incorrect
« on: April 24, 2020, 02:21:48 pm »
The southern end point for MA 88 is listed as East Beach Road.  I believe this is incorrect. MA 88 mile marker 0  signs are present on both sides of the highway at a point just south of the John Reed Road rotary. This is just after the bridge and before the state park beach parking. There are no additional MA 88 signs when traveling east. There is a MA 88 sign just west of the East Beach Road intersection; it has an arrow pointing up the road and I would interpret it to mean that MA 88 begins ahead.

For what they are worth, other internet resources I found have MA 88 ending at the mile marker 0 sign.

GMSV shows the current signage.

My in-laws live just off of MA 88.  The in-the-field situation is just like as described above.  Furthermore, MassDOT GIS shapefiles concur with the southern end of MA 88 being just south of the rotary, at Milepost 0.

My guess is the list file was created down to East Beach Rd because that's where OpenStreetMap shows MA 88 as extending to.  But the evidence as explained does not fully agree with that, especially MassDOT's GIS files which explicitly show it as "not a numbered route".

I'll truncate to CheWebbLn, keeping with the usual practice of putting an ending point at the center of the junction itself rather than the edge of its footprint, even if leaves a bit of a longer "tail" than normal.

BTW, welcome to the forum, nezinscot! I used to be first place in Maine, and had plans to take the crown for the Maine State Highways as well. And then, with the rate at which you shot up the rankings, decided to not bother. :)

Thanks for the welcome. I did a lot of driving Kittery - Oxford - Pemaquid  to see relatives last summer. I couldn't stand using the Maine Turnpike (monotonous) and US1 (people from away) on every trip, so I tried all the minor roads. I need to have a relative move Down East so I have an legitimate-to-my-spouse excuse to finish the state.
