CA: I-710 southern end

In 2013, Caltrans adopted the remainder of the Seaside Freeway from Ocean Boulevard to SR 47 over the Gerald Desmond Bridge as part of Route 710. Caltrans and the Port of Long Beach plan to replace the Gerald Desmond Bridge by 2016.

So, it seems that I-710 needs to be extended all the way to CA-47.  Signage (from 12/15) ([2] [3]) agrees with this.

No new exit numbers (so far) have been posted, but I doubt they will adjust the numbering scheme for I-710.

They're still working on the Gerald Desmond Bridge, last I heard. And Caltrans was going to wait for that to be done, before formally extending 710 to CA 47.

Still didn't stop them from fully posting it ahead of time since at least as of May '12 (see the [3] link above).  I mean, we've already added I-14, and that's just beginning to get it's shields.  Just saying.

I've found the bridge logs to be pretty good guides to what is and isn't included in routes. The signs you linked to indicate that the existing Seaside Fwy. takes you to I-710, but doesn't convince me that it's already part of I-710.

Anyway, California isn't one of those states that's in a hurry to seek Interstate status for new/extended freeways. CA 210 east of CA 57, CA 15 south of I-8, and CA 905 near the border seem to have been Interstate-ready for years, and logical additions to the Interstate system, but Caltrans isn't pursuing AASHTO approval for any of them. It would not shock me if, when Caltrans formally adds the Seaside Fwy. east of CA 47 to the state highway system, it becomes CA 710 rather than an I-710 extension (at least temporarily. pending AASHTO approval to extend I-710).

OTOH, I'm kinda wondering if CalTrans has been waiting for a moment like this, where they can bombard AASHTO with all their planned extensions. If this is the case, it wouldn't surprise me if CalTrans does have a piecemeal upgrade of CA 58 they want to complete, along with CA 99's upgrades, (and the I-710 tunnel!) before putting I-7/9, 15, 40, 210, 710, and 905 on the table.

Doubt it, since the other links were from the CA-47 interchange.

I would treat this topic as solved for now, but it's still on my radar. When the replacement for the Gerald Desmond Bridge opens (hopefully in 2019), we can revisit.
