IN: IN 56 relocated in Madison
« on: August 07, 2021, 11:23:26 pm »
Earlier today, I drove through Madison, only to find IN 56 on an unexpected routing. Between waypoints IN62_E and US421_N, IN 56 has been relocated to be concurrent with IN 62 and US 421. Signage at those waypoints direct IN 56 travelers to IN 62 and US 421, and away from downtown Madison. The old route appears not to be assigned any state route number, at least EB on the bypassed segment west of IN 7 (which remains where it was, with no need for any change other than label updates) and in both directions for a few blocks west of US 421.

I linked to this thread from the AASHTO Spring 2018 thread.  I noted that these changes could be done earlier this year.  I had not gotten to bringing it back up to mapcat yet.  (https://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=2455.msg22936#msg22936)

Interesting. INDOT maps still don't reflect the change. Did you happen to notice if IN 256 got truncated to IN 62/IN 56?

I'll reach out to INDOT for more info. Thanks for the report.

Relooking at this, I am referring specifically to the US 421/IN 56 realignment east of US421_N on IN 56.  I wonder though if that realignment led to further changes to IN 56 (and maybe IN 256 and/or IN 7) here as well.

They left Ind 7 alone into downtown Madison?

Don't know. I took a photo of the IN 256 sign north of the junction, but my photo doesn't show whether 256 still reaches the old IN 56 junction east of IN56/62.

Looks like it, with 7 signage at the junction with former 56, and also signage at the IN56/62 junction indicates 7 continues south of the junction toward downtown Madison.

Thanks for the additional info. INDOT's explanation is that SR 56 was relinquished within the city limits, which from their perspective means that the route continues to follow the path we have for it, but maintenance is provided by the city, not the state. The person who responded to me seemed unaware of (and unconcerned about) the IN 56 signage along IN 62 and US 421.

I do not know enough about the history of relinquishment in the state to know how common this is, and am unfamiliar with any precedents in Indiana.

I am trying to think about the difference between this and IN 26 in Lafayette (which was split in two).

Having stated that, US 421/IN 56 still needs to at minimum be realigned to complete the changes mentioned in the AASHTO Spring 2018 Thread.  (https://forum.travelmapping.net/index.php?topic=2455.msg22937#msg22937)

Is there any proof that the realignment project has finished?

See this article.  I thought that I had already posted an article stating that it was done in the AASHTO Spring 2018 thread, but I apparently did not.

INDOT has re-routed IN 56 "around" Madison via IN 62 and US 421. IN 256 has been truncated from the former alignment of IN 56 to the current IN 56/62. GSV from 11/2021 confirms signage reflecting both changes.

I merged the new IN 56 topic into the existing topic from August.
